How to: Create a Social Media Policy for your Organization

by ToddLiss on March 22, 2010

In the year 2009 social media has become mainstream to not only individuals, but businesses and brands as well.  Now that businesses are finally realizing the potential that social media has for their organization and customers, businesses need to acknowledge the brand monitoring that needs to take place.

As SM gains more traction in business, and more individuals (including your employees) are using it regularly, the importance of a set social media framework becomes very important in the businessa setting.  But you’re not a lawyer , if only you knew how to implement one for your business.

Let me introduce you to a great new tool – Policy Tool’s Social Media Policy Creator .  Now, it may not be perfect (you can hire a lawyer for $350/hr for that) but it’s better than a one page word document which has social media “suggestions”.

The beauty of the tool is the level of customization which it provides.  You can make the policy as strict or as relaxed as you wish.  You can even include who’s to be contacted for clarification and amendments to the policy itself.  After you answer a few specific questions about social media situations and issues, the tool outputs a legal worthy social media policy which is now available for all your employees.  Send it internally to all your employees and you have a social media policy.

A policy isn’t a necessity for all businesses, but for those who want to give their employees some sort of guidelines, and aren’t sure how to do so, this tool is just for you.  A policy like this could save you problems down the road as the level of transparency for businesses is at an all time high, and you need to protect your brand.

So now that you can create your policy, will it be strict or loose?  Leave your reasoning in the comments.
